Things to watch out for during first round

And then there were 22. That's how many Oakland County teams qualified for the state football playoffs, so Kosmo can't wait to see which ones will be at Ford Field, because there usually are a lot of county teams. But before Kosmo worries about the state finals, he'll focus on the first round this weekend. Here are the questions Kosmo is asking most as the first round commences. Can Lahser rebound in its rematch against Avondale? - Two weeks ago, Lahser played at Avondale in what amounted to a game for second place in the OAA Blue, and it was won 37-20 by Avondale. Well, these teams happened to draw each other in the same location on Friday, and rematches usually aren't the same. But all that might depend on the health of Lahser running back Nate Emery. He was bothered by an ankle during the first meeting, but if he's recovered, Lahser is a different team. It might still not be enough to overtake a talented Avondale team, but the game would be a lot closer at the very least. How neat is the Catholic Central-Hartland matchup? - Very neat, and Kosmo can't wait to see what happens. You have a school that's not used to football success in Hartland that's had a dream season at 8-1. It's rare when Hartland gets to play a home, so the whole community will be rocking for this one. Then you have perennial power Catholic Central, which barely got in at 5-4 but always is battle-tested. Kosmo is looking forward to seeing what wins out, playoff excitement or playoff experience. Can Southfield beat Detroit Martin Luther King again? - This is the definition of a toss-up. It was certainly like that in the season opener between the teams, when Southfield won in overtime by a point after MLK missed an extra point. This will be a wonderful 4:30 matinee at Southfield. Can Farmington rebound after two straight lopsided losses? - The Falcons got blown out the last two weeks against Harrison and Lake Orion, and it's not good to have such bad momentum going into the state playoffs. It's also not good to have such negative momentum going into a playoff game against Walled Lake Western at Western, so we'll see if the Falcons can get it together. Why are Farmington Hills Harrison and Birmingham Brother Rice headed so far north for their first round games? - Not even your all-knowing one can make sense of that. Harrison will play at Fenton while Brother Rice will play at Port Huron. And Division 2 happens to be the Division with the most Oakland County teams also. Go figure.
