Glancing at the tournament playoff pairings for boys soccer and football, Kosmo can't help but notice a juicy possibility brewing.
Brother Rice and Rochester Adams, then Brother Rice and Rochester Adams again.
If the Brother Rice boys soccer team beats Novi in a regional final tonight, the Warriors would advance to meet Rochester Adams in a state semifinal on Wednesday at Adams.
If both the Brother Rice and Adams football teams win tonight, they would play each other in a district final next Friday on the same Adams field.
Talk about creepiness as Halloween nears.
No doubt, that would make for a great few days among two of the better athletic programs in the county.
Each game would no doubt draw big crowds and get lots of media attention, which is always a good thing for high school sports in Oakland County.
Let's see if it happens.

First of all, sorry Kosmo has been lazy about blogging the last few days. Things have been going on at the cave that has required his utmost attention, but the K-Man is back on the blogging stratosphere now.
Looking at the pairings for the state football playoffs, Kosmo couldn't help but notice that Lake Orion and Clarkston drew each other in the first round of the Division 1 state playoffs.
That's too bad.
The teams just played this past Friday in its regular-season finale. Players, coaches, parents, fans and administrators get fired up all year for that game, only to see it essentially rendered meaningless because the teams play a week later on the same field with much bigger stakes on the line.
Kosmo gets geography and points and all that stuff, which is why the Wolves and Dragons are having this rematch.
However, there should be a state tournament rule that says teams that meet in the last week of the regular season can't meet in the first round of the playoffs.
That way, you don't punish the winning team of the first game by forcing them to beat the same team in back-to-back weeks and it doesn't taint the game each circles on their calander all year.

It doesn't get much better than rivalry week, the time of the season when school spirit is at its highest point of the season, even for teams that are bottom-feeders.
The motivation to beat an archrival is always enough to get a school geeked for this week.
However, the thing that makes this rivalry week interesting is the critical games between teams that are not traditional rivals.
One is at Stoney Creek, where the Cougars will host Farmington Hills Harrison in a battle of 5-3 teams that need one more win to get into the playoffs.
Another is at Auburn Hills Avondale, where Avondale will host Berkley in an other matchup of 5-3 squads. If Berkley wins, it would be its first playoff appearance since 1999.
Birmingham Brother Rice needs one more win to get in the playoffs, and it'll have to beat 7-1 Detroit Southeastern on Friday night at Southfield-Lathrup.
Southeastern recently had to forfeit its win in the PSL semifinal for using an ineligible player. Otherwise, Brother Rice would have to face 4-4 Detroit Cody.
Yet another non-rivalry game to keep an eye out on is at Wisner Stadium, where Pontiac will host Birmingham Detroit Country Day.
Pontiac would love to earn some more playoff points going into the postseason, while Country Day needs a win to clinch a playoff spot.

Monday morning in Kosmo's cave, and all he can forward tonight is, soccer? Yep, forget "Are you ready for some football?" the theme song of "Monday Night Football." Tonight is the first night of the boys soccer state tournament, and there are great matchups everywhere in tonight's first round.
Stoney Creek will play at No. 6 Lake Orion in a battle of two of the best teams in the OAA Red. Two more OAA Red powers will hook up when Clarkston plays at Rochester Adams.
Another good matchup will be Novi Detroit Catholic Central vs. Novi at 6 p.m. at Novi's Meadows Stadium.
The only sad part to all the good first round games is that after tonight, good teams will have their season end sooner than it should.
That's unfortunate, but it's all part of the state playoffs.
Are you ready for some soccer?

Last year, Farmington did the unthinkable by starting out the season 0-3, yet making the state playoffs by winning its last six regular season games.
Looks like there's a similar improbable turnaround brewing at Stoney Creek right now.
Following a 17-7 win over Oak Park on Friday night, the Cougars are 5-3 and one win short of qualifying for the state playoffs. Stoney Creek hosts 5-3 Farmington Hills Harrison on Friday with the winner earning a playoff bid. The loser will likely miss the postseason party.
It's a nice turnaround for Stoney Creek given it started out the season 1-3, but has reeled of five straight wins. The last two wins have been especially impressive, given the Cougars won at playoff bound Farmington and over an improved Oak Park team at Oak Park.
If Stoney Creek can beat Harrison, it could get another shot in the playoffs at archrival Rochester Adams, which won, 42-8, at Stoney Creek in Week 2.

OK, Kosmo admits he has this bad habit of jinxing people. He heaps praises on a team or individual, and then failure ensues many times.
However, the K-Man still can't help but give a shout out to the volleyball team at Birmingham Marian, because quite frankly, the Mustangs could end up being the best volleyball team to date EVER in Oakland County.
Sorry if you don't want to hear this, Mustangs. Just cover you're ears.
In a sport dominated by teams from the west side of the state, Marian has beaten most of the powers from the west side this year and is deservedly ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A.
Marian has two Miss Volleyball finalists in outide hitter Alexandra Cocklin and Rachel Charles and a supporting cast that is as good as most teams' starters.
The Mustangs have lost the last two years in a row in the Class A final, but this could be the year they get over the hump and win their first state title in school history.
If they did that, they would HAVE to be good because they would've overcome yet another Kosmo jinx. The K-Man has a feeling the Mustangs are too good for jinxes anyway.

The effort was gallant as always from Birmingham Brother Rice, but unfortunately, a loss was still a loss when the Warriors fell in three overtimes on Saturday at Orchard Lake St. Mary's, 34-27.
While Brother Rice is still 5-2, the defeat might end up being a playoff-costing loss for Brother Rice if the Warriors aren't careful.
The Warriors need to win one of their last two games to qualify for the postseason, although it'll be hard to get next week since Brother Rice on Saturday is hosting one of the top-ranked teams in the state of Indiana, Indianapolis Cathedral.
After that game, Brother Rice will likely have to beat Warren De La Salle in the wild card game of the Catholic League's Prep Bowl at Ford Field on Oct. 24. Brother Rice needed a last second field goal to beat De La Salle a couple of weeks back.
This isn't saying the Warriors will won't make the playoffs, but it's not out of the realm of possibility either that they'll be absent from the postseason party, making the three-overtime defeat to St. Mary's even harder to swallow.

THEY'RE HERE! Believe it or not, the first set of playoffs for Fall sports is already upon us.
Now, you football geeks may be questioning Kosmo's sanity, since the football playoffs don't start for another three weeks.
Same with the soccer folks, who know their playoffs don't start until Oct. 19, or the volleyball community since their postseason doesn't begin until November.
Well, today marks the start of regional tournaments for boys tennis and girls golf teams around the state, so technically, the playoffs do start today.
Once the postseason begins for one or two Fall sports, then the playoffs for the other sports aren't too far behind.
So with that in mind, Kosmo only has two words for you: PLAYOFF TIME!

The first six weeks of the high school football season are in the books, and even though three weeks still have to be played before the playoffs start, the postseason actually will begin next week as far as Kosmo in concerned. Plenty of marquee games dot the schedule in Week 7, starting on Friday when Farmington Hills Harrison travels to Rochester Adams for what will be a huge OAA White showdown.
Even though it won't be a battle of teams unbeaten in the league following Harrison's loss to Farmington last week, it's still a matchup of two of Oakland County's best.
If Adams wins, all it would have to do to win another league title is win at home over lowly Rochester in Week 9 (Adams plays a non-league game at Lake Orion in Week 8).
On Saturday, one of the state's best rivalries will be renewed when Birmingham Brother Rice plays at Orchard Lake St. Mary's.
Two state powerhouses and potential state championship teams. Enough said about that game.

One of the top junior high school basketball players in the state recently decided to make a decision on where he wants to play in college, as Southfield's Carlton Brundidge recently made a verbal commitment to Michigan.
It's no doubt a great catch for the Wolverines, as Brundidge averaged nearly 25 points a game last year as a sophomore.
It's also a good decision by Brundidge, who gets his college decision out of the way quickly, which should ease his mind and free him up to dominate in his next two years of high school basketball.
