So far this season, Kosmo has swelled with pride at the way the Clarkston boys basketbal team has been playing. Not only are the Wolves unbeaten, but they are manhandling opponents.
However, there likely will be a development soon that Kosmo doesn't like.
There's a great chance Clarkston will be the state's top-ranked team in Class A after Detroit Pershing lost last Tuesday.
As far as Kosmo is concerned, this is the last thing the Wolves need.
They've done fine as it is, and while Clarkston players and coaches will tell you they don't pay attention to rankings, they're lying.
Having that target on their banks can't be a good thing as Clarkston heads towards the playoffs and tries to break its quarterfinal hex, so here's hoping the Wolves lose at some point during the regular season.
That might be a drastic thing for Kosmo to say by hoping that they lose, but ultimately, that would be the best thing for Clarkston before the playoffs start.

Glancing at the OP the other day in his cave, Kosmo couldn't help but notice a couple of box scores from the Flint Metro league.
With a month left in the regular season, both the Oxford girls and Holly boys teams are in the thick of the league title hunt, which couldn't make the K-Man happier.
It would be quite a sight to see a county champion in the Flint Metro in both boys and girls hoops in the same year.
The one thing that worries Kosmo with Oxford is that rumor has it that one of the team's best players, Joelle Harms, is out for the season with a knee injury. This affects the Wildcats greatly, but fortunately there still is Allie Laidlaw and Brooke Bocquet to rely on.
As for Holly, it is tied with Fenton for first in the league standings with a home game against Fenton looming on Feb. 13.
With the league's best player in senior point guard Jordan Fowler and a force inside in Lance Hopkin, Kosmo is excited about Holly's chances to win its first league title since 2004.

As much as Kosmo likes to be upbeat and positive, he can't help but be down at what's taking place around Pontiac Central, where morale right now has to be at an all-time low.
First, arguably the best representative of the school, athletic director Bill Glover, dies suddenly of a heart attack while exercising on a treadmill in November.
Now, in the midst of what should be the most exciting time of the year in Pontiac, basketball season, Central is in the midst of terrible years in both boys and girls.
Traditional powers in both, both the boys and girls teams at Central are currently winless.
Kosmo NEVER thought he'd see the day where each is winless nearly halfway through the season.
If all that weren't enough, there's a meeting on Monday where it's expected that the Pontiac school board will make it official that both Northern and Central are merging into one high school.
It breaks Kosmo's heart to see all this happening at what traditionally has been one of the most important high schools in Oakland County, but hopefully something positive will come out of it before too long.

Glancing through the box scores in the Oakland Press at his cave the other day, Kosmo couldn't help but notice the performance of Oak Park senior K'Allante Miller. A freakishly athletic guard who has signed with Central Michigan, Miller exploded for 38 points in a win over Lake Orion. Rumor has it that Miller hasn't played many first halfs of late for disciplinary reasons, but it sounds like he has learned his lesson and is ready to take off. If 38 points isn't enough evidence, Kosmo doesn't know what is. The timing couldn't be better for Miller to start taking over, because look who is coming into Oak Park's gym on Friday. None other than unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Clarkston in what should be a terrific OAA Red showdown. Given his talents, Miller will no doubt have the attention of the Wolves.

Even though there was barely any snow that fell to the ground last Friday, many school districts canceled school because it was "too cold." Sorry, but Kosmo never had school called off when he was a youngster, he just wore lots of layers while waiting for the bus. Anyway, that's another argument for another time.
Regardless, the K-Man was happy to see that many schools still decided to play basketball games. There are some school districts that have policies in place where games can't be played if there isn't school, but many bent that rule on Friday, which was a good call in Kosmo's view. There wasn't any problem with the roads, so getting to games wasn't an issue for teams and parents. Gym space and time is cramped enough as it is in the winter, so forcing teams to re-schedule another game would've been a major hassle, if possible at all. Good job, whoever played on Friday

These are good times right now at Novi Detroit Catholic Central, and Kosmo isn't necessarily referring to the Shamrocks' dual wrestling match win over Clarkston the other day.
The other day in the Oakland Press, Kosmo picked Catholic Central's basketball team to lose to Warren De La Salle, saying if the Shamrocks upset the Pilots, then Kosmo could say they are for real.
Well, following Catholic Central's upset win, Kosmo has to say the unbeaten Shamrocks are for real. De La Salle is one of the state's top teams, and the Shamrocks prevailing made quite a statement.
Not only that, but the powerhouse hockey program is well, even more of a powerhouse. Catholic Central is ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 1 and even though it's only January, this may be the best and closest-knit team the Shamrocks have had since winning their last state title in 2005.

It's nearly the middle of January and there still are a few unbeaten girls basketball teams out there, although two of them are surprisingly so. Rochester Adams and South Lyon, two teamss that probably started the season with modest expectations, both are unbeaten heading into Friday night.
Adams is 7-0 following a win on Thursday at Oak Park, while South Lyon is 5-0 after a win over a decent Walled Lake Northern squad on Thursday.
The Highlanders play in the OAA White and are off to their best start since their glory years in the early to mid 1990's thanks in large part to the Newsom twins, Whitney and Lexy.
South Lyon is in the Kensington Lakes South division and is relying on a balanced attack led primarily by Kristin Short and Danielle Gotham.
Granted, both Adams and South Lyon will likely start facing better competition and will be hard pressed to go too much longer without losing.
Still, it's been a lot of fun for both so far for two teams Kosmo wasn't expecting to be unbeaten at this point of the season.

For eons, Kosmo has thought that without question, the best boys basketball league in the state was the Detroit Public School League. That may not necessarily be true year to year, but for the most part, the PSL is where it's at. However, not this year.
Nope, the best boys hoops league in the state this year resides in Oakland County in the form of the Oakland Actitivies Association Red division.
It drives Kosmo nuts when coaches say things like "Every game is a tough game in this league" or "There are no nights off in this league," but sadly, those cliches ring true this year in the OAA Red.
Clarkston is unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the state. Oak Park is a talented team that has one of the state's top seniors in K'Allante Miller, who has signed with Central Michigan. West Bloomfield has a solid group of individuals that forms a great team, one which beat Oak Park on Monday. Pontiac Northern is Pontiac Northern, Southfield also has talent (especially in sophomore guard Carleton Brundidge), Southfield-Lathrup is solid, Pontiac Central can beat anybody on a given night, while North Farmington has one of the area's best players in Kyle Vinales.
Yep, this should be a fun few weeks in the OAA Red, where literally every game is important

For those who are wondering where Kosmo has been the last two weeks and why he hasn't updated his blog, well, you don't want to know. Just kidding. Kosmo hasn't been in any trouble, he just spent the last two weeks of 2008 resting up and cleaning the crystal ball in preparation for what should be a power-packed start to 2009. Basketball will be back in full swing this week, with nearly 50 games being played on Tuesday. The best part is that they are all league games, so the season is cranking up right before our eyes. So Happy New Year have no fear, Kosmo will be back updating this blog regularly.
